Catholic Doctrine of the flying corpses at the Resurrection

Koot van Wyk (DLitt et Phil; ThD) Visiting Professor, Department of Liberal Education, Kyungpook National University, Sangju Campus, South Korea, Conjoint lecturer of Avondale College, Australia

Not many people think about it or the implications of what their doctrines are portraying to them. Here is the Catholic online Doctrine from the authentic site of the Vatican. Besides the borrowing from the Republic of Plato of the immortality of the soul, that reoccurs a number of times throughout the presentation of their doctrine, the concepts woven throughout is bolted with the Eucharist liturgy as central in importance and the shocking result of the flying corpses that accompanies the other living faithful on their trip to meet first the souls and then the Lord, souls which are send ahead of the angels and Christ to meet the corpses first and then be able to meet the Lord. The concepts of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 are central for a proper understanding of the resurrection.

II. DYING IN CHRIST JESUS

1005 To rise with Christ, we must die with Christ: we must "be away from the body and at home with the Lord."564 In that "departure" which is death the soul is separated from the body.565 It will be reunited with the body on the day of resurrection of the dead.566

564 2 Cor 5:8. Van Wyk Note: The juxtaposition here of a statement and biblical text creates a false doctrine. This is definitely not a correct extrapolation of the verse. It is treated here in isolation as a prooftext of an paganized-Christian concept which is extra-biblical. Paul begins his dualism already in 2 Cor 4:16 outlining the outer man and inner man dualism and that the outer one decays but the inner one is renewed day by day. The spiritual life and relationship with the Lord is in mind here. Affliction in this body is storing away eternal glory beyond imagination. We need to seek things that are not seen rather than things that are seen (verse 18). Without giving the time when the event happens in this pericope but revealed in many other Scriptural places in the New Testament, this earthly body will die and is like a tent but in heaven God has promised a building that is eternal (2 Cor. 5:1). The clothing with eternal perfection is necessary to live in heaven (verse 2). We live with the agony that maybe we will be unclothed later and be found naked (verse 4). Physically in this body one is absent from Christ in heaven (verse 6). We walk by faith not sight (verse 7). Good courage people are those who prefer to be absent from the body and to be [one day from the Second Coming] be with the Lord (verse 8). This is the nuance of the Bible and the logic prevailing in the majority of texts of the Bible.
565 Cf. Phil 1:23. Van Wyk Note: This is not what Paul says. It is a borrowing from Plato’s Republic.
566 Cf. Paul VI, CPG § 28. Van Wyk Note: This concept of Pope Paul VI is a false doctrine and it is impossible for corpses to fly heavenward to meet the souls in heaven since Paul says that the dead in Christ will be resurrected first then those of us who are alive will be caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air”. Will those who are alive at the Second Coming have to take a trip with millions of corpses flying heavenward to meet the souls? Will Christ send the souls ahead of all the angels and Himself to meet the corpses coming up to meet in toto Him with the others who stayed alive? The concept is extra-biblical and false.
