I Know Whom I Have Believed

 

1. I know not why God's wondrous grace

to me he hath made known,

nor why, unworthy, Christ in love

redeemed me for his own.

 

wondrous: 놀라운

grace: 은혜

unworthy: 가치 없는, 하찮은

redeem: 구속하다

 

Refrain:

But I know whom I have believed,

and am persuaded that he is able

to keep that which I've committed

unto him against that day.

 

believe: 믿다

persuade: 설득하다,⦗~ oneself로⦘ …을 확신하다 (수동태로도 쓰임)

able: 할 수 있는

keep: 지키다

commit: 맡기다, 위탁하다

against: ~ 때까지, ~에 대비하여

 

2. I know not how this saving faith

to me he did impart,

nor how believing in his word

wrought peace within my heart.

 

saving: 구원하는

faith: 믿음

impart: 나누어 주다

peace: 평화

 

3. I know not how the Spirit moves,

convincing us of sin,

revealing Jesus through the word,

creating faith in him.

Spirit: 영, 성령

move: 움직이다, 감동시키다

convince: ~에게 깨닫게 하다

reveal: 드러내다, 보이다, 나타내다

create: 창조하다, 일으키다

faith: 믿음

 

4. I know not when my Lord may come,

at night or noonday fair,

nor if I walk the vale with him,

or meet him in the air.

noonday: 한낮의

fair: 맑은

vale: 골짜기

air: 공기, 대기, 공중
