삼육대학교 학생 봉사대 – 케냐

한국의 긍지인 삼육대학교 학생봉사대가 2009년 12월24일부터
2010년 1월 5일까지 아프리카의 케냐에 왔읍니다.

삼육대학교는 약 5천명의 학생으로 재림교회 대학교로 세계에서 제일 큰 대학교 입니다.
사람을 변화 시키고, 세계를 변화…”시키는 표어를 가지고,
인성과 품성 개발에 중점을 두고 있습니다.

학생들이 왜 방학 동안 자기들만의 유익한(?) 시간을 희생해서
먼 아프리카의 케냐에 자원 봉사를 왔을까요? 
이 젊은 학생들은 무엇을 바라보고 있을까요?
그들이 원하는 것이 무엇일까요?

13명의 학생과 박상희 목사님 부부, 그리고 인천의 한 여집사님,
이렇게 16명이 도착하여 안식일까지는
동,중앙 아프리카 지회”(East Central Africa Division of SDA)에서
무료로 제공한 방에서 모두 여장을 풀고,
안식일 예배는 나이로비의 “라빙튼 교회”에서 예배 드리며,
일요일인 27일은 전세 뻐스로 300키로 떨어진
엘도렛”(Eldoret) 의 “삼불”교회로 도착하여,
미리 준비한 교회 신축을 대학생들이 일주일 동안 봉사하고,
한 팀은 무료진료 실시하여 큰 호응을 받았으며,
저녁에는 전도회를 실시 했습니다.

삼불교회 신축등 모든 행사에 케냐의 삼육개학인
바라톤”(Baraton)대학생 15명이 자원하여,
한국의 삼육대 학생과 같이 봉사한 예는 주민들을 감격해 했고,
이 지역은 2년전 대통령 선거후 불만으로 초래된 종족간의 갈등으로 황폐화 됐으며,
많은 사람들이 다쳤습니다.
이 분들이 무료 치료를 받으러 온 것입니다.

동행한 인천의 여 집사님은 “삼불 교회” 신축의 지붕 건축재를 헌금 하셨고,
케냐 마사이 족 새 개척교회 “에코베레티”(2009년 11월 선교보고) 교회의
평신도 목회자 1년 월급을 헌금 했습니다.

삼육대학생의 2주간의 케냐 방문 봉사는 여러모로 중요한 의미를 안겨줍니다.
이들이 신축한 교회, 무료 의료 봉사, 전도회 등 실제적인 도움의 물질적 가치 보다는,
역사적, 상징적인 가치가 더 큽니다. 40년 전에 한국은 케냐보다 못 살았습니다.
그러나, 한국은 세계 제 10-12위 잘 사는 나라로 성장했고,
인구의 30%가 기독교화 됐습니다.

3천년의 불교 문화, 6백년의 유교문화 나라, 1백년전 나라를 뺐겼든 뼈아픈 역사,
60년전 모든것이 파괴 되었던 6.25 동란을 겪은 파란만장의 한국이
이제 도움을 받는 나라에서 도움을 주는 나라로 바뀐 것입니다.
도움을 받은 빚을 갚는다는 의미를 훨씬 넘어 이제 한국은 세계로 뻗어나가
우리의 사랑을 나눈다는 것입니다.

귀국행 비행기를 탄 고단한 학생들의 심정은 뿌듯하며
자기들이 남을 도울수 있었다는 행복감에 넘쳐 피곤도 잊었을 겁니다.
같이 자원봉사한 바라톤 대학생들은 어떻게 느꼈을까요?
왜 잘사는 한국학생들이 시간과 돈을 허비(?) 하며 아프리카의
케냐까지 왔을까 하고 생각했을 겁니다.
도움을 받은 주민들은 한국의 삼육대학생들을 일생 잊지 않을겁니다.
새로 세워진 “삼불”교회 교인들이 예배드릴때 마다 봉사자들을 생각할 겁니다.

2010년에 삼육대학교는 더 많은 학생 봉사대를 세계 각처로
보낼 계획이라고 전해 들었습니다.
변화된 삼육대학생들이 세계를 변화 시키러 세계로 나아 갑니다.
그들의 모든 봉사에 하나님께서 특별히 축복하실것을 기도 합니다.

     Sahmyook University Students Volunteers to Kenya;

The volunteer students of Sahmyook University came to Kenya during Dec.24-Jan.5 for volunteers works.

The Sahmyook University in Korea, the largest Adventist University in the world with approximately 5,000 students, is a gem of a university of “Bring changes to Human, Changes to the World…” as a motto.

Why these students came to such a far away country like Kenya in Africa from Korea?  What will they be looking at and what would they want?

13 students, Pastor and Mrs. Park as leader and a deaconess from Incheon arrived in Nairobi on Dec.24^소, staying at ECD (East Central Africa Division-Adventist organizational name) at a courtesy of the ECD President Pastor Mbwana, worshipped at “Lavington SDA Church” in Nairobi during Sabbath and headed to Eldoret, about 300km to a destination of “Sambul SDA” Church; They were divided into 3 groups; “Sambul” Church building group, free medical treatment group and crusade.

About 15 Baraton SDA University, another fine educational institution of the Adventist in Kenya, has jointed to work together with Korean students; residents of this area were impressed especially sudden violence 2 years ago after presidential election has devastated and people were somewhat divided. Many of those victims were treated.

The accompanying deaconess has donated construction material of church roof, and also one year salary of a lay pastor to “Ekobereti” Maasai church (Maha Mission report in Nov.2009).

Two weeks of Sahmyook University students volunteer works brings many important meanings to us; in addition to their practical, material help they brought and provided such as construction of a new church, medical rally and crusade are important enough but their historical, symbolic value far supersedes.

Forty years ago Korea was not as well off as Kenya, however, Korea grew to 10-12^th  wealthiest country in the world, 30% of population became Christians;

3,000 years of Buddhism, 600 years of Confucianism, Lost country 100 years ago, 60 years ago it was totally devastated due to Korean War…was receiving help from other countries, now turned into a helping country. Not just for reason of paying back what they owed, but into the world they wanted to share their love.

Just imagine how these tired students could have felt on an airplane flying back home that they were able to help others in their own way! Guess how Baraton University students felt while working together shoulder to shoulder with Korean students! How local residents were impressed why these “Muzungu” (non-black) students come all the way so far from Korea wasting (?) time and money.

We are sure they will never forget them engraving in their heart for a long time. Sambul church members will remember them as long as they come to worship in that church, medically treated people will remember.

We heard Sahmyook University plans to send out student volunteers by the hundreds around the world this year; Changed student-saints are going out to change the world, which belongs to them. We pray God bless the students.
