"탄자니아" 의 아름다운 도시 "아루샤",  마사이 촌 "카라오" 선교 방문:  
선교 보고 <2009-5>

 2월 11일 아침 8시 나이로비에서 20인승 버스를 타고,
오랜만에 경쾌한 관광을 했습니다.
 남쪽으로 3시간 반 걸려 국경에 도착, 수속 30여분, 탄자니아로 넘어오니
아름다운 경치가 한 눈에 전개되며 멀리 로긴도 산 (Mt.Logindo, 2,629m)이
앞에서 환영합니다.
버스 안의 모든 사람들이 유명한 "킬리만자로" 산 (아프리카에서 제일 높음.5,895m)
을 쳐다보며 환성을 지릅니다.  


다시 2시간 반 남쪽으로 내려가서 "아루샤" 라는 도시에 도착 했습니다.
깨끗한 작은 도시인데 나무가 많고, 꽃도 만발해 있습니다.
아루샤 바로 옆에 다른 높은 산 "메루"(Mt.Meru, 4,565m)가 있어서,
아루샤를 더욱 아름답게 치장하는 듯 합니다.


아루샤에는 재림교회 탄자니아 연합회 본부가 있고, 연합회장님,
"카쥴라" (Pastor Kajula) 목사님이 반갑게 맞아 줍니다.
은퇴하실 나이가 지났는데 다음 선거 때 까지 유임해 달라해서,
67세에 하나님을 위해 끝까지 봉사하시는 하나님의 종입니다. 
얘기를 나누다 보니 "아이야스" (AIIAS, 재림교회 신학대학원, 필립핀 에 소재)
동문입니다. 나이는 제가 위고, 학교는 12년 후배였습니다.

 
카쥴라 연합회장님이 "아이야스" 재학 시 마지막 해에 돈이 다 떨어져,
"아이야스" 한인 목사회에서 1년간 학비, 생활비를 대주어 졸업 했다고 합니다.
 제가 한국 사람이라고 하니 제게 감사의 말씀을 하십니다. 
1991년에 "아이야스" 에서이런 선행을 하신 한국 목회자 분들의 결실이
한 국가의 교회 지도자를 배출해 낸 겁니다.

 
연합회장님과 같이 아루샤 삼육 대학을 방문하고,
아루샤의 제일 오래된 교회를 둘러 봤습니다.
오래 전 동방교회(Eastern Orthodox)를 구매하여
그대로 보존하여 특이한 건축풍을 가지고 있습니다.

 
다음날 교육부장 "루싱구" (Pastor Lusingu) 목사님과 
70킬로 북쪽 (로긴도 산) 으로 가서, 좌 회전(서쪽), 흙 길 30킬로를 가니,
"카라오" 마사이 촌에 당도하게 되었습니다.
광활하고 평평한 열대 사막 같은 땅인데 몹시 가물어서 잎이 가는 나무만 있는
이곳은 별로 집이 안보였습니다.


 멀리 촌락으로 형성된 작은 마을 (스와힐리 어로 “보마”라고 함.
보마 는 5-15 가구 정도 되며, 넓은 들판에 보이지 않게 숨어 있으나
금새 많은 사람이 출현 하는 듯 함.) 이 드문 드문 있어서,
어느새 사람들이 2-30명 몰려 옵니다.
1-2 킬로 주변에 30여 개의 보마가 있습니다.   
이런 보마가 끝없이 이어진다 합니다.
탄자니아에는 6백만이 훨신 넘는 마사이 족이 삶니다.

그분들의 과분한 환영을 받고, 밖의 땡볕이 뜨거워 학교 교실로 들어서니
어른 마사이 들이 벌써 아이들을 제치고 앉습니다.
여기서 천사를 만났습니다.
아일랜드의 “에스텔레” (작은 별)는 벌써 5번째 이곳에 와서
조용히 마사이를 돕고 있는데,
두사람, 혹은 어떤 때는 6명의 친구들과 같이 와서 봉사 합니다.
짧게는 한달, 길게는 4-5개월 씩 체재 합니다.
빈 교실 콩크리트 바닥에 텐트를 치고,
야전용 공기 매트레스를 깔고 잡니다.

 “에스텔레”는 택시 운전을 합니다. 모은 돈으로 “카라오” 마사이 를 도와 줍니다.  
요즘은 경기가 안 좋아, 택시 수입이 없고, 다시 올 수 있을 지 불투명 합니다. 

이 분은; 

1.   3명의 마사이 선생을 월급을 주며, 70명의 어린이를 가리킵니다.
     그 중 1명은, 성경을 가르칠 수 있고, 전도도 할 수 있습니다.


2.  70명의 어린이에게 1일 한끼씩 밥을 줍니다.
     대부분의 어린이와 마사이는 하루 한끼씩 먹습니다.


3.   3-4명의 학생을 장학금을 주어, 도시에서 공부 시킵니다.


4.  아일랜드에서 모금을 하여, 3만불 씩 두 번을 식수 공사를 실패 했다 합니다.
    사기가 떨어져 있더군요.  125m를 팠는데 물이 안 나옵니다.


5.   모든 마사이 들과 자연스럽게 친하며, 아이들은 기대고 만지고 합니다. 
    이분이 앉으니 열명 정도의 아이들이 주위에 달라 붙어 앉고 서고 합니다.

 BMW 선교회 “전도회 및 무료진료”를 이곳으로 정했으면 합니다. 
선생님 3명에게 자전거 1대 씩 주고, 에스텔레가 3월 말에 떠나면, 
그가 하던 사업을 BMW가 계속 연결하여 도와주고,
카라오를 출발점으로 탄자니아의 모든 마사이에게 복음을 전파 했으면 합니다.
에스텔레 한 개인의 노력과 힘이 진하여 끝이 나는 게 아니라,
위대한 하나님의 사업에 그가 불을 켜 놓은 겁니다.
천사가 하던 일을 BMW가 이어 더 크게 수확을 거두면
얼마나 하나님께서 축복을 하시겠습니까?

BMW 에서 이곳을 결정 하면, 12-15명의 선교사 들이 7월9일 에서 20일 까지
전도회와 무료진료를 계획 합니다.
탄자니아 연합회 에서도 적극 협조 할 것을 약속 합니다.
모든 편의를 다 제공하고 전도회를 이끌어 갈 계획입니다.

날이 맑으면 멀리 눈 덮인 “킬리만자로” 산 봉우리를 보고, 
가까이는 “로긴도” 산과(30키로), 100키로 멀리 “메루” 산(아루샤 에 있음)을
음미하며, 메마른 황야의 지루함을 위로 받으며, 
예수님의 지상 명령인 전도 사업으로 많은 영혼들을 제자 삼기를 기도 합니다.

안식일에 연합회 교회에서 특별히 시간을 배려해 주시고, 
마사이 전도를 할 수 있게 인도해 주신 하나님께 감사 드리며,
 감격과 흥분으로 돌아오는 버스에서의 지루함도 잊었습니다.

 “ARUSHA”, a beautiful city of Tanzania,     “Karao” – Maasai Village: Mission Report <2009-5>

Pleasant bus ride from Nairobi southward to Tanzania, early morning of Feb.11, 3.5 hours later, border of half an hour passport process, continue to south.

Mt. Logindo (2,629m) welcomes you 30km away, standing like a guard to greet you, feel like only a few hundred meters away. Most of 20 seater-bus passengers are on their way to the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895m), the highest in Africa.

Further 2.5 hours of southward bus ride took us to “Arusha”, a stunning beautiful city of many trees, flowers and clean environment. Mt. Meru (4,565m), decorates Arusha, its peak shy to be shown, usual clouds can not overwhelm its height, adds its beauty to the already Switzerland atmosphere,  Mt. Horeb could have been like this when God was dwelling in it for Hebrews out of Egypt in Moses time.

In the outskirts of this gem of a city is the location for headquarter of SDA Tanzania Union. Pastor Joshua Kajula, President, welcomes with big smile standing a big rock, passed already retirement age but was asked to stay on until next election, thus continuously serving God. We found out we are “AIIAS” (SDA theological graduate seminary in the Philippines) alumni, I am older to him but he is about 15 years senior to me in school age.

In 1991 while last year in AIIAS, he recalls of Korean pastors association in AIIAS supporting him of his tuition and other expenses, and expresses gratitude simply because I happen to be a Korean. Those pastors then did not know they were grooming a future leader of SDA church in a great nation of Africa.

He escorted me to a tour of SDA University of Arusha, visited Theological faculty. On our way back, we stopped by an oldest SDA church, the building purchased from Orthodox church, its front entrance no doubted points to the east.

On the following day, Pastor Mambwe (Exec. Secretary) kindly arranged Pastor Lusingu, Education Dir., and myself to Maasay land; 70km due to north (where Mt. Logindo stands), then left turn (to due west) 30km on desert road.

Except 2-3 tall mountains (described above) standing guard, the entire region is flat and mostly desert; continued from Kenya southward, overflow into Tanzania, then gently twists to south-east, this approximate area is where mass Maasai is inhabited in a “Boma” (Kiswahili, mini village 5-15 families) style. Usually their houses do not stand out due to mud (for walls) and dried thatched roof colors, blend with surroundings.

We have arrived to “Karao”; there is no landmark except 4 classroom moderate school building. Without this school building, you can never tell “Karao” where about 1,000 somewhat Maasai reside in 2 km radius. If you extend to 5km radius, I am sure of thousands Maasai. Some Maasai students walk to Mairowa high school, next trading town 12 km away. Thus, small children study here since they can not walk that far. And there are wild animals.

We did not deserve such a welcome! About a dozen Maasai was dancing clapping hands according to rhythm. We eventually went to classroom due to throwing down sun. Maasai were already sitting down inside classroom pushing children aside.

Here, I met an angel, “Estelle”, herself an Irish, driving a taxi for living, 5th trip either alone or at times with friends as many as 6 missionaries, serves 4 weeks to 5-6 months. Estelle was living in a tent, spread out on concrete floor in one of empty classrooms.

This time, it was her 8th week and 6 more weeks to go. She was not so sure when and whether she will be able to come back because worldwide serious economic and financial situation even caught up with her taxi business…not many people want to go around in taxi anymore.

What Estelle did was;             

       1.  Hired and paid salary to 3 Maasai teachers, who take care of 70 children.  One  One of them is an evangelist.

       2.  Provided 1 meal a day to all 70 school children. Most of Maasai eat one meal a day.

       3. Scholarship to 4 Maasai student at boarding school.

       4.  Raised funds twice $30,000.- each time to drill bore hole for water.   No water was coming out; the day I visited Karao, we saw trucks still trying to drill  Too  the water. Too bad to see her money go wasted.

       5.  Became a natural friend with Maasai. Children lean on her, touch her.  

As she sat down, about 10 children came around sitting and standing.

I would like to suggest BMW to come in July for “Crusade and Medical Rally” for one week; Provide bicycles to each of these Maasai teachers, and see if BMW would like to take up what Estella has left…a jump pad God has provided to BMW for eventual evangelization of entire Maasai, whether in Kenya 1 million, or 6 million plus in Tanzania side.

Estelle’s work will never cease, instead she has just ignited a flame/torch…     for God’s work of mission…wouldn’t it be wonderful for BMW to carry on the torch/flame and we are sure God will bless all for their works.

Should BMW decide affirmatively, about 12-15 Korean-American SDA missionaries, including some nurses, medical doctors may come for a week in July. Tanzania Union has shown positive cooperation let alone their leadership in crusade which might start one week earlier than BMW arrival, thus making 2 weeks of crusade with one week medical treatment.

On a fine day (almost everyday is fine day here), we can view snow-covered Mt. Kilimanjaro Peak far away, Mt. Logindo-30 km away, and Mt. Meru beside Arusha -100 km away, in-between is all desert;

Wonderful setting to do mission work, having consolation from nature God has created…

          a Great Commission Jesus Christ has Himself has commanded

                      before He ascended into heaven!

Spent Sabbath at Tanzania Union Church, thanks for inviting me to share time during Divine Service, long bus ride back to Nairobi was rather short because of excitements and thankfulness to God for having led me to Maasai Karao with the expectation of continued service as His vessel to do His will.
