Christ our Substitute
on one end has Christ our Example on the other.

This section will look at dr. Hans K. Larondelle's treatment of the theology of Christ our Example. In one, we do not participate but receive by grace in the other we participate fully in an interrelationship. In this second aspect of the great truths of salvation, we are made worthy for the price He shed for us. By bubbling over of the love that saved us we become a witness to others to join such worthy cause. By ascribing everything horizontal to a vertical relationship, we join the Example of Christ who did nothing without considering His Father in Heaven. The book is that of Hans K. Larondelle, Perfection 1971/1984: 159-245. The Guide summarizes Larondelle in three different levels. .

Imitation of Christ (imitatio Christi) (HKLRD 159-245)

a. Matthew 5:48 Be ye perfect then as my Father in heaven is perfect.

1.  Sermon on Mount not different from Jesus other sayings.

2. The word then in the verse connects the Sermon on the Mount with what precedes it.

3. The six negative statements before the Sermon on the Mount is brought together in the Sermon itself.

4. It is not good to separate the Sermon on the Mount from the rest of the Gospels or the chapter.

5. The Sermon on the Mount is a summary of what Jesus said so far.

6. Negative statements in the first half is followed by positive statements in the Sermon of the Mount itself.

Imitation of Christ (imitatio Christi) (HKLRD 159-245)

a. Matthew 5:48 Be ye perfect then as my Father in heaven is perfect.

1.  Sermon on Mount not different from Jesus other sayings.

2. P. J. du Plessis (1959): 168 indicated that oun = then connects the Sermon on the Mount with the rest of Matthew 5 (Larondelle 1971/1984: 159).

3. J. Schmid 1965: 113 indicated that the "Grundgedanken der sechs Antithesen die sittliche Forderung Jesu, mit einer sonst nirgends mehr wiederkehrenden Schärfe zusammen" [Fundamental thoughts of the six antitheses of the Sermon on the Mount of Jesus, brought together with a returning sharpness].

4. W. Davis (1964): 14 "Any attempt to understand the SM [Sermon on the Mount] in stark separation from the rest of the Gospel must therefore be deemed inadequate".

5. G. Friedlander (1911): 84 "This statement is clearly intended to be a summary of all that Jesus has said in the Sermon up to this point".

6. The other statements in chapter 5 are negative about the Pharisees who themselves do not enter heaven but also prevent others from entering. Thus, negative statements in the first section is followed by positive statements in the Sermon on the Mount.
