저 먼 언덕 위에

The Old Rugged Cross


1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

The emblem of suff’ring and shame;

And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best

For a world of lost sinners was slain.


hill: 언덕

rugged: 우툴두툴한, 거친, 조야한

emblem: 상징, 표상, 표적

suffering: 고통, 수난, 고난

shame: 수치, 치욕, 부끄러움

dear: 사랑하는, 친애하는, 소중한

lose: 잃어버리다. lost: 잃어버린

sinner: 죄인

slay slew slain: 죽이다, 살해하다


Refrain:

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

Till my trophies at last I lay down;

I will cling to the old rugged cross,

And exchange it someday for a crown.


cherish: 소중히 하다

trophy: 전리품, 전승 기념품, 트로피

at last: 마침내

lay: 누이다, 놓다

cling: 매달리다, 고착하다, 고수하다, 애착하다

exchange: 교환하다, 바꾸다

crown: 왕관, 면류관


2. Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,

Has a wondrous attraction for me;

For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above

To bear it to dark Calvary.


despise: 멸시하다

wondrous: 놀라운

attraction: 매력, 사람을 끄는 힘

lamb: 어린양

leave left left: 떠나다, 남기다, 남기고 떠나다

glory: 영광

bear: 나르다, 가져가다, 지니다, 지다, 견디다


3. In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,

A wondrous beauty I see,

For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,

To pardon and sanctify me.


stain: 더럽히다, 얼룩지게 하다

blood: 피

divine: 신성한

pardon: 용서하다

sanctify: 거룩하게 하다, 성화하다, 죄를 씻다


4. To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;

Its shame and reproach gladly bear;

Then He’ll call me someday to my home far away,

Where His glory forever I’ll share.


true: 진실한

shame: 수치, 치욕, 부끄러움

reproach: 비난, 치욕

gladly: 기쁘게

bear: 몸에 지니다, 지다, 견디다, ... 자세를 취하다

call: 부르다

glory: 영광

share: 나누다, 공유하다
