Elder Gerald (Gerry) Dwain Karst was born in Canada, and prior to his election in July 2000 to serve as a general vice president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he was assistant to the president of the world-wide church. He holds a master of divinity degree from Andrews University in Michigan and is an ordained minister. For the past 30 years, Karst has served the church in various positions including pastor-evangelist of the Alberta Conference, president of the Newfundland Mission, president of Middle East Union, director of communication and church ministries for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada, as well as an associate secretary for the Generarl Conference.
Elder Karst is married to Verna Lillian Moores and the couple has two adult children: Julie Diane Satelmayer and Jeffrey Gerald.
