rest: 쉼

 

3. There let the way appear, steps unto Heav’n;

All that Thou sendest me, in mercy giv’n;

Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee.

appear: 나타나다

step: 계단

send: 보내다

mercy: 자비

beckon: 손짓으로 부르다, 신호하다

 

4. Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,

Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;

So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.

 

wake: 잠깨다, 일어나다

thought: 생각

bright: 밝은, 환한

praise: 찬양

stony: 돌같은, 냉혹한

grief: 슬픔, 비탄

Bethel: 이스라엘의 지명. 야곱이 형을 피해 도망하며 돌 베게를 베고 자다 꿈에 하늘까지 연결된 사다리를 본 후 하나님을 만난 곳이며 “하나님의 집” 이란 뜻임.

raise: 일으키다, 일으켜 세우다

woe: 비애, 비통, 고뇌

 

5. Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky

Caught up to meet my King swiftly I fly

Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee

 

joyful: 즐거운, 기쁜

wing: 날개

cleave: 쪼개다, 가르고 나아가다

catch, caught, caught: 붙잡다. 과거 분사 caught는 “붙잡힌 바 되어” 의 뜻

swift: 날랜, 빠른

fly: 날다
