Friends and neighbors had heard that William Miller had strong views about the Second Coming.
They then started talking with crooked mouths.
A doctor was his neighbor.
He tells patients: "Mr. Miller is a handsome man and a good neighbor. His problem is that he is a monomaniac on the subject of the Second Coming.
One of Miller's children fell ill and he then asked the doctor to come and see.
The doctor then prescribes something for the child.
He then saw that Miller was standing far away in a corner.
"Well, are you sick too?" the doctor asked Miller.
"Well I don't really know doctor. Said Miller. I would like you to look at what's wrong with me and give me a prescription".
The doctor felt his pulse and could not tell what he was doing.
"What is your complaint?" he asked Miller.
"Well," says Miller, "I don't know but I'm a monomaniac."
"The doctor's eye stretches slightly".
“I would like you to examine me and see if I am.
If I am, please heal me.
Can you tell someone if the person is a monomaniac?" asks Miller.
The doctor blushes and says he thinks he can tell if someone is a monomaniac.
Miller then said that the doctor should tell him how he knows someone is a monomaniac.
"Why," says the doctor, "a monomaniac is someone who is normal on all subjects except one, and if one mentions that one subject then remains
the person focuses on that one subject".
"Well," said Miller, "I want you to examine me and say if I am such a person. If I am, prescribe me something to cure me."
"Stay here for two hours."
"We will look at the subject of the Second Coming."
"After two hours you will be able to tell if I am a monomaniac".
"There will be no doubt in your mind. I can assure you”.
The doctor doesn't want to go in at first but willingly.
Miller then said that he would pay for everything.
The two then sat at a table with two Bibles, one for Miller and one for the doctor.
Miller asks the doctor to read Daniel 8.
At the ram, Miller stops the doctor.
"What does the ram mean?" Ask Miller.
The doctor then said that he had read Isaac Newton's commentary and it referred to Persia, followed by Greece and then followed by Rome.
Miller then asked, "How long is the vision in Daniel 8?"
"2300 days" said the doctor.
"What?" said Miller, "are you telling me all the kingdoms were only 2300 literal days?"
The doctor answered quickly. "No, those days are years, according to all the commentaries, and those kingdoms continued for 2300 years".
Miller then said to the doctor, "Can you go to Daniel 2 and Daniel 7".
They then go through all the animals and the same list of kingdoms can be seen.
"Can you tell me", said Miller, "when the 2300 years will end?"
"No, I have no idea". Said the doctor.
Miller then asked him to go to Daniel 9 verses 21.
Daniel sees "the man Gabriel whom he saw in the vision".
"What vision?" Miller asked the doctor.
"It's clear that this is the vision in Daniel 8" says the doctor.
"Therefore understand the matter and understand the vision". Miller says to the doctor, "He came to explain the vision to him, right?"
"Yes" said the doctor.
"Well," said Miller, "seventy weeks have been determined, what are these 70 weeks a part of?"
"Of the 2300 days" said the doctor.
"Then, do they start with the 2300 days?" asked Miller.
"Yes". said the doctor.
"When does it end?"
"In 33 AD" said the doctor.
"How long will the period be after AD 33 to the end of 2300 years?"
"The doctor subtracts 490 years from 2300 years and says it is 1810 years".
"But, that's in the past". Said the doctor.
"But there are still 1810 years after 33 AD so where will it end?"
The doctor immediately says that the 33 must be added and he writes 33 and 1810 and when he adds it he says that it must be 1843.
The doctor fell back in his chair. His face is red. He grabs his hat and leaves the house not happy.
The next day he is back in Miller's house.
He then said that he did not close an eye.
He counted and counted and the numbers remained 1843.
The problem is that he himself is not spiritually ready for the coming of the Lord.
For the rest of the week he came every day for spiritual healing.
Every day more joyful.
Before the week was over, he was also a monomaniac, says James White in the biography.
