April 29  When Does The Sabbath Begin?-2

But at the place which the Lord thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the passover at even, at the going down of the sun. Deut. 16:6.

How could God for 10 years let His people live in error on the time to begin the Sabbath? I dont' know. But I do know that He did. Pershaps that tells us something about Him.

We should realize that not all Adventists believed that Bates was right in his 6:00 p.m. argument. Some held for sunrise and others for sunset and a few for midnight.

By 1854 the issue had become so troublesome that James White feared "division unless the question could be settled by good testimony." White claimed that he never had been completely satisfied on the 6:00 p.m. time and that the Sabbatarians had never fully investigated it from the Bible. He would later note that Bates' stubborn "stand upon the question, and respect for his years, and his issue from the Bible "as thoroughly as some other points."

In the summer of 1855 White asked young John Nevins Andrews to prepare a study on the topic from the Bible. Andrews was the right man. Thorough to a fault, he went at the task with a vengeance.

Being a firm believer in the 6:00 p.m. time, Andrews was shocked by what he found:
 1. "Thous shalt sacrifice the passover at even, at the going down of the sun"(Deut. 16:6).
2. "The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even. . .and when the sun is down, he shall be clean"(Lev. 22:6, 7).
3. "And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased"(Mark 1:32).

Text after text piled up as Andrews set forth the biblical evidence on the Bible definiton of "even."

His conclusions: (1) that Scripture offered no evidence for the 6:00 p.m. time and (2) that "the Bible, by several plain statements, establishes the fact that even is at sunset."

He presented those conclusions at a general meeting of Sabbatarians on November 17, 1855, and they moved into line with this "new" biblical light.

Lord, help us to keep our minds open, even when we are convinced that we know the truth.
