April 15  Refining The Advent Message

For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters. Rev. 7:17.

Revisionism was a part of the development of Sabbatarianism in the 1850s as they began to take a second look at some of their understandings and adjust accordingly.

So it was on aspects of the shut-door issue, as we saw yesterday. Thus by early 1852 James White could proclaim: "This OPEN DOOR we teach, and invite those who have an ear to hear, to come to it and find salvation through Jesus Christ. There is an exceeding glory in the view that Jesus has OPENED THE DOOR into the holiest of all. . . If it be said that we are of the OPEN DOOR and seventh-day Sabbath theory, we shall not object; for this is our faith."

During the early 1850s he and the other Sabbatarians were rejoicing not only in God's progressive leading but in the beauty of their message and in the magnitude of the mission He had set before them.

Their attitude has something vital in it. They were not afraid to admit that they had made a mistake. Not only were willing to adjust those that time and further study showed to be in error.

Too many of us view truth as static. Some of us even perceive the message of the Seventh-day Adventist Church as something that was born fully developed back in the 1840s.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The Adventist belief system is a dynamic aspect of the movement. As God leads, the denomination has been willing to follow. Thus its understanding of Bible truth and its mission has grown and expanded across time. Building on what has proven solid, including its central pillar doctrines and its understanding of the flow of prophecy between Revelation 12:1 understanding of the Bible's message and the needs of a sinful world.

And the transformations aren't over yet. God will continue to lead His people up through that day when we see Christ coming in the clouds.
