Translation Pure and undefiled religion next to God
and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, to
keep himself unspotted from the world.
Commentary
of Critical Scholars “they
stand in connection with the world, on which account they have to preserve
themselves from its contaminating influence. This preservation, as it is a work of God (John xvii. 15), so it is likewise a work of man (1 Tim.
v. 22), and therefore a task which
believers must continually strive to perform.
Conclusion:
Sanctification is the work of God and the
work of man. Whether you want to argue like Calvinists are doing in the Heidelberg Cathecism of 1616 and the
Dortrecht Confession that sin is both action and a state, James is clear that
the solution is both getting rid of actions and of the state. Why? Unspottedness is not just on the
surface. When the Holy Spirit Comforter II works, it is unspotted results.
